The Mountbatten Institute’s international Analyst Intern programs with Fortune 50 companies in New York or London offer a unique way of linking international workplace practice with business theory, combining paid, full-time internships with a British post-graduate qualification.
Established in 1984, the Mountbatten Institute’s mission is to foster international and cross cultural understanding through experiential education, practical training, and residence abroad, and to provide opportunities for personal growth and professional development.
Mountbatten Institute and SOIL
Since 2014, SOIL graduates have been invited to apply for Analyst internships, with the possibility of applying for a highly competitive scholarship for covering Mountbatten’s PG Certificate program fees.
Interning in London or New York
There are 300 internships per year offered in New York and 200 in London. Current company placements are with approximately 100 companies at the leading edge of global corporate leadership. All interns, regardless of their previous work experience or internship title, receive a training allowance of approximately USD 1000 per month. In addition, Mountbatten provides fully furnished, shared housing (2 interns per bedroom in a centrally located 2 or 3-bedroom apartment) as well as medical insurance. Food and transportation expenses, utilities expenses, as well as travel and visa costs for the US/ UK are borne by interns. The Mountbatten Institute is a recognized exchange program provider, and sponsors a twelve-month long visa for interns—either a J-1 visa for the US, or a Tier 5 visa for the UK.
Postgraduate Qualifications from UK University
The Mountbatten Institute’s mission is not just related to providing MNC experience. Mountbatten is a leader in experiential education, combining practical training in the workplace with classroom training in international business. During their internship year, Mountbatten interns must enroll in one of three postgraduate courses:
1. PG Certificate in International Business Practice, validated by St. Mary’s University, UK (cost: USD 12,000)
2. MBA in International Business Practice, validated by St. Mary’s University, UK (cost: USD 36,000)
3. MA in Entrepreneurial Leadership in Global Business, validated by Chester University, UK (cost: USD 16,000)
For all three academic tracks, the coursework is completed through part-time evening/ weekend study and requires anywhere between 6-10 hours of work outside the classroom per week. Assessment is through examinations, group projects, research papers, class participation, and through a thesis for the MA and MBA options. At the end of the program, successful interns receive a postgraduate qualification from Chester University or Saint Mary’s University.
Mountbatten Institute in Asia: Alumni Speak
The Mountbatten Institute has been placing international candidates in internships for almost 30 years. Asian operations for Mountbatten started in 2006, and there are currently 400+ Indian alumni of the Institute. The Institute opened an Indian office in Delhi NCR in February 2014.
Indian alumni report that one year abroad helps them fast track their career, and is equivalent to 2-3 years spent in the home country. Compensation is also fast-tracked: alumni surveys indicate an earnings jump from INR 5-7 lacs CTC to anywhere between INR 8-12 lacs CTC post-program. In the recent past, as many as half of Mountbatten’s Indian alumni have been offered post-placement opportunities within their internship company’s India operations. The remainder report that they are successful in finding a suitable job anywhere between 2 weeks- 2 months after returning from their Mountbatten London or New York year.
Achin Jain (SOIL 2014-2015), who has been placed with Citi in New York as a Financial and Project Management Analyst within the March 2015 intake, writes:
“I am all settled into the apartment and at office as well. I have 3 flat mates, who are all from UK and are from the last year August intake. I am enjoying living with them, discussing problems faced at work, at home and more over partying with them over the weekend. All Mountbatten trainees from New York stay in Newport, NJ in 4 buildings next to each other. So every time I walkout I meet some or the other Mountbatten intern. It is good to learn from them about what they do at their work place in their respective Banks. This has given me an opportunity to understand the various work roles and functions of a Bank.
First two days, after my arrival in NY was Mountbatten orientation where we were told about different aspects of the program at Mountbatten, our work place, New York culture, working in NY, social security number, drug test and setting up of the bank account. It was really educating and really helped in settling me down here. I have my class on every Wednesday evening till second week of April, post which I will get a new schedule. My office is 40 minutes away from where I live, however it is very convenient to travel by NY metro. Weather has not been very harsh till now, though it snowed last week. It is warm during the day and really cold at night. Being a Delhite has helped me as I am used to these drastic weather changes.
As far as my work is concerned, I am loving it. We are a team of 5 here, 3 of us being at the Sr. Analyst level working with the Vice President and Senior Vice President of Citi Global Operations and Technology division. We do internal budget planning and fund allocation for different initiatives at Citi in operations and technology. We work closely with directors and PMOs to decide the future strategic initiatives and revenue forecasting on the basis of funds allocated to each initiative. We have our back office in Pune and Mumbai with whom we coordinate every day for various reports. Until now it has been a wonderful experience working with Citi.”
How to Apply
Eligibility criteria to apply for the Mountbatten Institute include a Bachelor’s Degree or higher (grade of 55% or above), outstanding communication, cross-cultural, and analytical skills, and excellent Microsoft Office skills. For the US, a TOEFL score of 575 or an IELTS score of 6.5 is required.
Candidates also require a minimum of 1 year of work experience and for scholarship candidates, the work experience should ideally be in a multinational or finance/ investment banking environment.

Successful candidate profiles in the past have included 21-28 year old professionals with a BBA, BMS, MBA, B.Com, M.Com., CA, CS, B.E., LLB, LLM, BA or MA Economics/ Statistics degree, and work experience in a multinational or highly professional office environment, especially with a Finance/ Accounting/ IT/ Business Administration/ HR profile.
There are two intakes every year, starting in March and August. Application deadlines are 5-6 months prior to program start date. Mountbatten staff reviews all applications on a rolling basis and mmunicates acceptance decisions post deadline. Successful candidates have to undergo two rounds of interviews: a face-to-face interview in major Indian cities, followed by a phone or Skype interview with the London or New York hiring manager. Those candidates who are selected in the hiring manager interview are sent the paperwork for obtaining their J-1 or Tier 5 visa. Candidates are thus formally offered an internship before they depart for the US or UK.
