Prof. Debi Saini, our faculty for Employee Relations introduced us to a new HR jargon called “Employability”. Found this concept pretty interesting and hence thought of doing some fact-finding regarding what it stood for. And here’s what I found:
Instead of focusing on the traditional concept of employment, employers and employees alike are shifting their focus to what we call ‘employability’. This entails the employing organization to direct its efforts towards honing the competitive skills of the employee which can be utilized both within and outside the organization. Recently, an HBS article had discussed the shift from the old covenant of offering lifetime employment to the new covenant under which the employer and employee share the onus for maintaining as well as enhancing the employability of the individual. The company should take upon itself the responsibility to facilitate employees with the requisite tools, an unrestricted and accessible milieu along with opportunities for assessing and developing their skills. On the other hand, it is the employee’s responsibility to manage his/her own career path and show commitment to the purpose and vision of the organization for as long as he/she is there. This results in a group of self-reliant workers and a career resilient workforce, to say the least.
Lo behold!! Simple thoughts, but even simply overlooked.
I started writing this blog around two months back. And what reminded me to get back to complete it was what I heard one of the business leaders say about SOIL today. He said that SOIL was well on its way to creating employable individuals, individuals who are well-equipped to step/re-step into this ever- changing, dynamic and demanding corporate world.
Yet again, I feel immense pride in being a part of the Charter Batch of SOIL.
